神社とお寺の違いとは。

What is the difference between Shrine and Temple?

祀られているのは　Who is enshrined?

神社は日本古来の神道の神々を祀っているところであり約８００００社あると言われています。

お寺は仏教の仏様を祀る施設です。全国に約７７０００カ寺あると言われています。

Shrine is for Shinto where enshrine original Japanese deity.  About 80000 shrines are built in Japan.

Temple is for Buddhism where enshrine Buddhism statues.  About 77000 temples are built in Japan.  

建物の特徴は　Characteristic of each.

神社は一般に　鳥居、参道、手水舎(ちょうずや／てみずや）、本殿　という作りになっています。

寺は一般に山門、仏殿があります。

Shrine is characterized by Torii gate, 　approach, 　Temizuya where you purify your hand and mouth, and main shrine building.

Temple has Sanmon, the main gate and Butuden, where Buddhist statue is enshrined.

参拝の仕方  How to worship

神社ではお賽銭をいれたあと二拝ニ拍手一拝　寺ではお賽銭をいれたあと合掌, 礼拝

In shrine、toss in offering to the box, the bow twice, clap twice and bow again.

In temple, toss in offering to the bow, hold your hand together and bow.
